Each lottery ticket used in this series at one time had an unknown outcome where someone had the hope of winning big. However, the investment into the realm of chance did not pay off in the way one had hoped. Instead, I’ve collected many losing tickets second hand and assembled them into these collages to depict Lady Luck. The term had originated from ancient goddesses around the world in which one worships and honors the sublime for the prospect of luck and fortune. A couple of names that this goddess had was Fortuna (Roman), and Tyche (Greek), among many others from different cultures and parts of the world.
Ultimately, the activity of gambling in itself can become a skill to some and a fear to many. It’s driven some people wildly successful and others to abysmal failure. The lure of gaining something more than what one has through chance, or even cunning, is always an unpredictable territory. In some sense everything is a gamble. Is there a goddess in control? Such as Lady Luck?
The lottery is many things. It’s a game that enlists one’s hopes and desires. It’s also an addiction, or can be. Falling into the fantasy of being a hero from zero is easy to do. Having fallen into this narrative at one point in my life, these works describe a silver lining of the losses that I have accumulated.
